What is Irish Dividend Withholding Tax?

Dividend Withholding Tax (DWT) is a tax deducted at source in Ireland – typically at 25% – from dividend payments before they reach investors.
However, many non-resident investors (individuals, companies, and other entities) can claim a full exemption or a significant refund, meaning a larger share of the dividend stays with the investor once secured.

The exemption applies where the investor is resident in a ‘relevant territory’ and files the correct declaration form (V2A for individuals, V2B for companies, V2C for other entities).

Am I eligible for an Irish DWT refund?

Eligibility depends largely on your country of residence. Ireland recognizes more than 70 countries as relevant territories for this purpose.
Exemption and refund claims must be submitted to the Irish Revenue Commissioners within four years of the end of the calendar year in which the DWT was withheld – so it’s worth applying as soon as you’re eligible.

Relevant territories for Irish DWT relief:

Any EU member state (other than Ireland)

Any EEA state (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway)

Any country with which Ireland has signed a Double Taxation Agreement (DTA/DTT)

Relief at Source Through V2 Forms

Correctly completing a qualifying nonresident form is an essential step in obtaining relief at source or reclaiming overpaid DWT in Ireland. A different form is used depending on the type of investor (V2A for individuals, V2B for companies or V2C for other persons).

Once approved, the form remains valid for up to five years of coverage. This means investors don’t need to wait for a refund to benefit from a reduced tax rate; instead, the correct rate of DWT can be applied at source, right at the point the dividend is paid.

With Sprintax Dividends, you can efficiently prepare your required form and secure relief at source or reclaim overpaid tax on Irish dividend payments.

FAQ

Your questions, answered.

Dividend Withholding Tax (DWT) is a tax applied to dividend payments made to non-resident investors. Its purpose is to give the Revenue Commissioners (the Irish tax authorities) an opportunity to collect tax due before the money leaves the country.

The standard DWT rate in Ireland is 25%.

However, international investors can typically benefit from a full exemption or reduced rate – either applied at source or reclaimed as a refund after the dividend has been paid.

Yes. Dividend income from Irish sources is taxable when paid to nonresident investors.

That said, many international investors are entitled to claim a full exemption or reclaim a substantial portion of the tax withheld. Exactly how much can be reclaimed depends largely on the investor’s individual circumstances – most notably, their country of residence.

The standard Irish DWT rate is 25%. However, international investors may be exempt from paying DWT, or this rate may be reduced for investors whose country of residence has a tax treaty with Ireland.

When applying to recover dividend withholding tax from Ireland, you must include a number of documents with your application. These include:

  1. Your completed claim form.
  2. The relevant dividend voucher.
    1. If you hold your shares directly with the company, original dividend vouchers must accompany the claim.
    2. If your custodian holds the shares directly with the company as part of a block holding, you will need the original Block Voucher and a breakdown of beneficial owners. You should also include the corresponding subsidiary tax certificate(s) issued to you by the custodian with your claim.
    3. If your custodian holds your shares through Euroclear Bank (or is Euroclear Bank itself), Irish Revenue will expect Euroclear Bank to provide details of its role in the ownership chain. Euroclear Bank participants and any other intermediaries involved still need to issue subsidiary tax certificates, and all relevant certificates should be included with your claim.
  3. Power of attorney or a letter of authorisation, if the claim form is signed on your behalf.
  4. A nominee statement, if the shares are held in a nominee capacity on behalf of the beneficial owner (excluding cases where shares are held directly or indirectly by Euroclear Bank).
  5. A copy of the relevant exemption declaration form (Form V2A, V2B or V2C, as appropriate).
  6. Any trustees’ certificates issued in relation to the claimant (where the claimant is a non-resident trust), or any certification issued by the Revenue Commissioners.
