Nonresident tax 101: Understanding residency, withholding, and reporting rules

About this session

Nonresident tax can feel like a maze of visa categories, withholding rates, and tax forms – but it doesn’t have to.

Join us for a practical webinar built for payroll and HR professionals in U.S. organizations and universities managing nonresident staff. We’ll break down the substantive rules behind nonresident tax: how tax residency is determined, how withholding actually works, and what it means for the forms your organization files every year.

You’ll gain a practical understanding of how nonresident status is determined and what it means for your withholding and reporting obligations.

In this free event, our speakers cover everything you need to know about nonresident tax rules.

Topics covered in the session include:

  • How tax residency is determined (visa status, the Substantial Presence Test, and common exemptions)
  • The basics of U.S. tax withholding, reporting, and filing
  • Nonresident withholding rules under §1441, including the FICA exemption and income tax treaties
  • Common tax forms – W-4, W-2, 1042-S, W-8BEN, and Form 8233
  • Q&A session
  • And more!
