The Sprintax Story
Sprintax is a global fintech specializing in nonresident tax compliance. We provide a suite of software solutions that simplify tax determination, withholding, tax return filing, and reclaim services for individuals, investors, and organizations.
Originally launched as a nonresident tax advisory for U.S. universities, Sprintax has rapidly evolved in size and capability. Today, we are the trusted tax compliance software provider for over 700 institutions and corporations, including Ivy League schools and some of the most recognized universities across the United States.
Headquartered in New York, the Sprintax team regularly travels across the US and internationally, speaking at payroll and educational exchange conferences on nonresident taxation.

Sprintax Dividends launches to help individual and institutional investors reclaim cross-border Dividend Withholding Tax (DWT). The first software of its kind to address double taxation for individual investors. Processed over $1.5 million in refunds within the first eight months.

Sprintax CEO, Joanna Murphy wins the FinTech Pioneer of Year Award at the National FinTech Awards.

Developed in response to requests from US university partners, Sprintax Calculus is launched to simplify tax determination and withholding for organizations with international employees and vendors. Later that year, Sprintax signs its first US government contract.

Sprintax Returns launches e-filing for federal tax returns, streamlining the filing process for nonresident users. In the same year, Sprintax partners with Harvard, MIT, and Princeton to support their international student and scholar offices (ISSO) with nonresident tax compliance.

Sprintax unveils a new brand identity and launches a redesigned website to reflect its growth and expanded services. A major software refactor is completed, achieving ADA compliance and enhancing accessibility for all users.

Joanna Murphy is appointed CEO of Sprintax. That same year, Sprintax surpasses $1 million in federal tax refunds for nonresident filers. Sprintax also partners with TurboTax, becoming the nominated nonresident tax partner of the leading US tax filing platform.

Founded by Irish entrepreneur Terry Clune, Sprintax is launched as a nonresident tax advisory for international students at U.S. universities. The software is developed to support federal and state tax preparation for nonresident filers. In its first year, Sprintax helps over 10,000 international students and J visa holders file a 1040-NR with the IRS.

Terry Clune is the Founder and Chairman of Sprintax and CEO of CluneTech.
A graduate of Trinity College Dublin, Clune came up with the idea of a tax preparation company while working in Germany as a student.
Terry found himself paying about 50-60% tax on his income in Germany and so when he finished his construction job he started to figure out how to get that tax back. Back in Ireland, Clune processed tax refund applications for his friends and other students. The service proved popular and, after Clune graduated, he employed a staff of three and opened a small office in Dublin. The company experienced a rapid expansion and developed a range of new services for a diverse range of clients.

Joanna Murphy is the Chief Executive Officer of Sprintax, a leading tax compliance platform for nonresidents, trusted by universities, employers, and international investors globally. She also serves as CEO of Taxback and the Irish Diaspora Loan Fund (IDLF)—all part of the CluneTech group.
Joanna joined the group in 2013, initially leading the growth strategy for Connect Ireland. In 2017, she co-founded the IDLF to support diaspora-led investment in Ireland. Since becoming CEO of Taxback in 2019, she has overseen the expansion of its international services, particularly in the U.S. through Sprintax.
Joanna is responsible for leading the corporate direction and strategic vision for the group, driving business expansion, and enabling a team of entrepreneurial senior managers to deliver excellence in technology and service to a global customer base.

Vice President
Enda is based in New York and has been assisting universities and nonresident international students and scholars with US tax withholding and Federal and State tax preparation for over ten years. He has been awarded the IRS VITA Foreign National qualification and is currently studying to become an IRS Enrolled Agent. Over the last three years, Enda has delivered more than 150 tax workshops all across the US. Sprintax has assisted over 300,000 students and scholars during the same time.
